The Art Of Flying

Keeping Yourself From Falling

Somewhere above the clouds, in the clear crisp morning sky lives a dream that we all share. Keeping yourself up, day after day, isn’t easy. Inspiration can be hard to find, knowing where to look can be even harder. For a plane to manage lift off it requires a knowledge of fluid mechanics. Air and water are the same when it comes to the physics of nature. Submersed in the air of our own atmosphere we are seldom aware of it. Have you ever held your arm out of a car window while driving down a road and felt the wind against your hand? As the car slows down so does the pressure against your hand. This is called drag, the resistance of your hand against the air. Turn your hand side ways and you feel the drag decrease and the angel of your hand now determines if your hand is pushed up or down. The less drag the easier it is to fly, but the drag is necessary. The resistance to the air causes lift or descent. For flight to occur the thrust must be greater than or equal to the amount of drag. The direction is controlled by the pitch of the plane. It’s attitude towards the resistance.

The Laws of Flying

The basic principals that govern nature work on humans as well. After all we are a part of nature and live in a fluid atmosphere without whom we could not fly or survive. Your attitude towards resistance determines whether you fly or you fall. Could life be as easy as sticking your hand out of the car window? Maybe, it all depends on your attitude. While it may not seem easy because you feel the drag of the resistance around you. Submerged in your life you make choices on a whim based on your current mood(attitude). Look back at the direction you came from, then you’ll know which way you’ve been going. If it’s not at the altitude you wanted then it’s time to change your attitude.

Use as much thrust as you feel there is resistance, want it as much as nature pushes back. Begin to climb through the clouds that hang above your horizon. With a balanced thrust to drag, lift to weight ratio a plane obtains successful flight. As long as the planes angel of attack doesn’t surpass it’s maximum lift, the direction it faces it’s resistance, it won’t stall. Flight is one of the greatest achievements of the human race. It has taken us off the planet and enabled us to peer into the depths of our universe. It has increased the size of our understanding a trillion fold. Whats even more amazing than all of this is that the laws of the universe are the same. We can see the fluidity of the galaxies in motion and the laws that govern them are still the same. The same as they are for us. Somewhere above the clouds, in the clear crisp morning sky lives a dream that we all share.

Life can feel like a continuous resistance, like a small plane flying through a giant storm becomes shaken and worn. Eventually the small plane will pass through to the clear blue sky. The weather is dynamic and ever changing just like the events of your life. It’s true for everyone, some hide it better than others but it’s still there. We all suffer the same storms and fly the same blue skies. Life is an attitude based on the choices we all make. I can’t tell you what they should be for you but I can tell you that if your not aware of the physics of nature, you will stall. If the stall isn’t quickly and properly adjusted for your plane will go into a spin.  A downward spiral that becomes harder to recover from.

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air,
Up, up the long delirious burning blue.
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew;
And while with silent uplifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God!

-John Gillespie Magee Jr.

Above the mountains and rivers, the forest and the rocks. Up there it’s easier to get around than it is on the ground. Keep your spirit in the sky and be the pilot of your life. Somewhere above the clouds. If you take a look around you’ll find that you can see from horizon to horizon and the world below you is oh so small now. You can do whatever you want to do if you just face the right direction. The universe is a part of you and you are a part of it. Let it flow through you like wings gliding on the wind. Find the air-plane of your soul.
